Indiana's half-gym-half-house viral real estate sensation in Wilkinson, a town 30 miles east of Indianapolis, population 450, is up for sale again -- with major upgrades and a $599,977 asking price.
The 11,000-square-foot property, also known as the former Wilkinson High School gym built in 1950, began showings by appointment only Tuesday.
"This historic gym transformed into a modern residence offers a rare blend of historical charm and contemporary comforts," the home's listing reads. "Featuring meticulous upgrades, a serene location, and a rich community history, this home is an exceptional find for those seeking a unique living experience."
For the past 18 months, owners Lauren Petry and her husband, Kyle, have been toiling, remodeling, refurbishing and renovating their one-of-a kind piece of real estate with four bedrooms, three baths, a great room, a spacious kitchen and a playroom that sits on 3.6 acres.
When the Petrys bought the property in July 2022 for $300,000, $1,000 above its $299,000 listing price, they had no idea they were sitting on a coveted, viral abode.
As they settled into the home, which was part basketball court, bleachers and rafters and part cozy living room and pretty kitchen, the couple learned that after their offer was accepted the home's listing had gone viral and nearly 50 more offers had come in -- some for more than double the price.
Those offers didn't matter at the time. The house already belonged to the Petrys. But earlier this month, boasting major upgrades, the couple put the house on the market again.
"This is more than a purchase. It's an opportunity to continue a legacy, to become part of a story that has been unfolding for decades," the listing reads. "Whether you're a basketball enthusiast, a lover of unique homes, or someone who cherishes community ties, this property promises to be a fulfilling and inspiring home."
The new $599,977 selling price is nearly $300,000 higher than when it sold in July 2022, a 50% increase. But along with that higher price come key improvements, according to LevelUp Real Estate Group. Those improvements include:
Historical preservation: The gym's original floor was meticulously refinished, maintaining its nostalgic appeal.
Modern comforts: Installation of central air and significant electrical upgrades, including a new power panel box for the gym, and modernized living space.
Elegant renovations: The bathroom and kitchen have been transformed with stylish updates, including new tile, vanity, and stainless-steel appliances, featuring an induction stove and an air fryer oven.
Technological integration: The addition of Wi-Fi connectivity brings this historic space into the digital age.
"This property, a blend of past and present, offers a rare opportunity to own a piece of Wilkinson's heritage with the comforts of modern living," reads the listing. "It's more than a home; it's a community landmark, a space where history and future possibilities converge.
